PENNY-FARTHING
Since the pedals of early bicycles were fixed to the front wheel, the only way to increase speed was to increase the size of the wheel - hence the 'Ordinary', or 'Penny-Farthing' introduced in England by James Starley in the early 1870's. Wheel sizes of up 4 or 5 feet were common. These machines were notorious for their instability: having the rider's weight almost directly over the front axle made for frequent, undignified and dangerous falls.
